SANTA CLARA, CALIF. — The Dallas Cowboys rushing attack hasn’t done well through the first six games of the season.
Now the Cowboys will be without their leading rusher.
Cowboys running back Rico Dowdle was an expected scratch for Sunday’s game against the 49ers due to an illness, per the team. Dowdle started feeling sick when he arrived at the stadium.
That means the Cowboys will likely have a backfield that features veteran Ezekiel Elliott and veteran Dalvin Cook, who was elevated from the practice squad earlier this week. Cook is set to make his season and Dallas Cowboys debut.
Even with Cook’s elevation, the Cowboys were expected to give more carries to Dowdle this week. Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy said after the bye that they needed to get Dowdle more carries in the offense.
That won’t happen.
