Dallas Cowboys linebacker DeMarvion Overshown is facing major knee surgery and may not be back on the field to until 2026, owner Jerry Jones acknowledged on his radio show on the team’s flagship station Tuesday morning.

The Cowboys feared the worst following Monday’s 27-20 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals Monday night, believing that Overshown ruptured multiple tendons his right knee.

Tests confirmed that Overshown ruptured his ACL, PCL and MCL, per coach Mike McCarthy.

“DeMarvion Marvin’s getting ready to have a big surgery in front of him,” McCarthy said. “It was a significant knee injury. Just being on the field part of the exam. I knew it was serious. Obviously, his physical football talent speaks for itself. He’s but he’s just such a bright light. He’s got a great, infectious personality. We’re definitely going to miss him. He’s got a long road of rehab in front of him. So he’ll obviously be loved and supported every step of the way.”

Considering the time of year, it’s now likely that he misses in the entire 2025 season, McCarthy said.

“I think that’s fair because of the time of year,” McCarthy said. “Obviously, we’re in December. You have the surgery and then the rehab is a long process. I think that’s very realistic.”

It’s a devastating setback for Cowboys and Overshown, who missed his entire rookie season in 2023 after tearing his ACL before the regular season.

“I just can’t tell you how bad I feel for him because he’s just been through that the mental and the physical rehab on his other knee and then to turn around and have to go through that again,” Jones said. “It’s the toughest time for a player and we all see the loss and know what it’s going to mean for us in our remaining four games. But bottom line is that it’s really sad that he’s having to have this surgery for him as an individual and obviously us as a team.”

Overshown had been one of the Cowboys bright spots in a down season. He was considered a rising star as the team’s second-leading tackler with five sacks, an interception, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

Cowboys edge rusher Micah Parsons grew emotional and came to tears when discussing Overshown’s injury.

“I cried,” Parsons said. “It’s like my little bro, bro. He doesn’t deserve that, either. He really don’t. Just to understand what he’s going to go through and to be there for him physically, mentally. It’s just so challenging because of the year he was having. I really just don’t think that’s fair, either.”

McCarthy said the whole team was devastated by the Overshown injury on top of the loss to the Bengals, which ended a two-game winning streak and likely eliminated the Cowboys from playoff contention.

It was as dejected a locker room he has seen in some time.

“He has that presence, a very bright light,” McCarthy said. “We were excited about him right away. He’s the same guy every day. He’s very well liked, very well respected and has a great personality. I think that’s a big part of where we are as a team. Our urgency needed to be at the highest and it was. He was one of the guys leading the charge. I think it’s very natural reaction by his teammates. He carries some juice.”

McCarthy is hopeful for a full recovery by Overshown based on how he attacked and handled his previous knee injury.

This one could be an even longer road back.
