Just when the Texas Rangers’ Opening Day roster appears to be mostly set, along comes Kevin Pillar in the outfield mix and Jack Leiter and Kumar Rocker to the rotation battle. Pillar was signed Sunday to a minor-league contract, and the veteran is a defensive whiz and can hit left-handed pitching. Evan Carter and Leody Taveras have not hit left-handed pitching in the past, so there’s an avenue to the Opening Day roster for Pillar. Leiter tossed two innings in his spring debut, and he could be a starter or reliever to start the season. Kumar Rocker makes his first spring start Tuesday, but Leiter and Rocker both have to beat out Cody Bradford for a rotation spot. Bradford, by the way, was excellent in his spring debut.
