Dallas Cowboys defensive end Micah Parsons promised last December that he would try to a better leader and would make a point to show up for offseason activities for the first time in his career.

The caveat was always a prospective contract extension for Parsons, who is heading into the final year of his rookie deal. He is set to play on the fifth-year option at $24.07 million in 2025.

He wants to get one done and the Cowboys do as well.

A source told DLLS Cowboys last month that owner Jerry Jones and Parsons had a handshake deal on an extension that would make him the richest non quarterback in NFL history, surpassing the $41.5 million salary signed recently by Cincinnati Bengals receiver Jamar Chase.

Jones confirmed that he and Parsons have come to a meeting of the minds on a deal at the NFL League Meetings.

But there was no deal because the Cowboys had yet to include Parsons’ agent David Mulugheta in the conversations.

Jones also intimated that he wanted to see Parsons improve as a leader.

And part of that was staying around and participating in the offseason program, which Parsons has missed the past three seasons to train and workout on is own.

“Micah has to be the player that he wants to be paid as,” Jones said. “He has to be a tremendous leader for the Dallas Cowboys. He has the skill, he has the capacity mentally. And so for us to justify the kinds of dollars we’re talking about, with any basis, he has to literally lead the way, and he’s so substantive that if he’s half way not leading, it’s glaring. And so Micah has to really lead. I think he’s committed to doing that.”

Parsons has backed up his verbal commitment by showing up for the start of the offseason program on Monday along with the rest of is teammates.

It’s unknown if he will continue to participate when the Cowboys move from weight lifting and conditioning drills to on-the-field football work and chance the risk of injury.

But Parsons has taken the first step. He has showed up. This is something the Cowboys wanted to see.

Now Jones needs to follow up, keep his word and sign him to a contract extension to make sure he continues in participation in the OTAs, minicamp and training camp.

The first step towards that is calling and including Mulugheta as Parsons has asked him to do.
