Reports surfaced Tuesday night that the Texas Rangers and Boston Red Sox have discussed a trade involving Corey Seager. It isn’t going to happen.
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — The winter meetings end Wednesday. The rumors that the Texas Rangers and Boston Red Sox are talking about a Corey Seager trade end now: It isn’t happening.
Multiple outlets in Boston reported the story Tuesday night. One reporter tried to put an end to it, saying there is “no momentum” toward a deal for the Rangers’ best player, but the buzz festered overnight and into the morning.
It served as a form of entertainment to the Rangers, who dismissed it as the kind of runaway rumor that can develop at the winter meetings.
Did Boston call about Seager? Almost every player on every team is talked about in the offseason, so, yeah, the teams talked. The Red Sox are apparently calling multiple teams on infielders, including the Diamondbacks and Ketel Marte.
Boston officials might have seen that the Rangers are pinching pennies this offseason and figured it was worth a shot. And the inquiry was quickly shot down.
That doesn’t mean something won’t happen with Seager in the future, but the Rangers are not trying to trade the five-time All-Star.
The Rangers have six more years to go on the 10-year, $325 million contract Seager signed Dec. 1, 2021, hours before baseball’s owners locked out the players amid collective-bargaining strife. He’s been their best player since.
Seager helped lead the Rangers to their first World Series title two seasons later, earning MVP honors in the Fall Classic for the second time in his career. He was the runner-up that year for the American League MVP, losing out to Shohei Ohtani.
Injuries have kept Seager in check the past two seasons, including an appendectomy in 2025 that prevented him from hitting 30 homers for a third straight season. On a team that couldn’t hit, though, Seager still could.
He will continue to hit. The Rangers’ No. 1 goal should be figuring out how to keep him on the field. Leg issues have hampered him, but so have a thumb injury and two sports hernias. The appendectomy was just a freakish thing that could happen to anyone.
What’s next in his medical future? To be determined.
What isn’t TBD is a trade to the Red Sox. It’s not happening.
