LAS VEGAS — As Mavericks rookie guard Sergio De Larrea drove toward the basket, he decided to add some flair.
De Larrea threw an underhand pass that bounced perfectly off the hardwood into the hands of a trailing Morez Johnson Jr., who caught it and slammed down a dunk for his first points of the game. Later, after a De Larrea steal, he attempted a behind-the-back pass reminiscent of former Dallas Mavericks guard Rajon Rondo.
“The NBA is really trending towards having as many point guards on the floor as you can at one time,” Mavericks summer league coach Joe Boylan said. “I think that gives you a lot of flexibility and adaptability where you can play alongside another ball handler. And I I think he’ll get opportunities both as the primary and as a secondary guy.”
