The Texas Rangers didn’t wait until Monday’s trade deadline to make additions, acquiring reliever Chase Silseth and catcher Logan O’Hoppe from the Angels on Wednesday night.

Needing a right-handed reliever and help at catcher, the Texas Rangers found a trade partner Wednesday in an unlikely spot: their own division. But help is on the way after they acquired Chase Silseth and Logan O’Hoppe from the Angels.

The deal, made official Wednesday moments after the Rangers’ 3-0 loss at Tampa Bay, is one of the first across baseball ahead of the annual trade deadline Monday. The Rangers waited until the final hour at last year’s deadline to do their heavy lifting.

The expectation is that Silseth will join the Rangers on Friday at Houston rather than make the cross-country trip from California to Florida for the series finale Thursday against the Rays. O’Hoppe, who is struggling offensively this season, will be optioned to Triple A Round Rock.

The Rangers sent 19-year-old infielder Angel Arredondo, who was playing for Low A Hickory, to the Angels. A $300,000 signee in the 2024 international class from Mexico, Arredondo was not rated among the Rangers’ top 30 prospects.

Silseth and O’Hoppe, both 26, come to the Rangers with multiple years of contractual control remaining, which will solve personnel gaps for multiple seasons. For the rest of 2026, Silseth is providing the Rangers with a big right-handed relief arm while O’Hoppe will add to a thin catching corps.

Silseth’s fastball has averaged 96 mph this season, and he has struck out 10.89 batters per nine innings. He has walked 22 batters in 39 1/3 innings, a big number, but only six of those free passes have been to right-handed hitters.

He figures to slot into the late-inning mix with Jakob Junis and Jacob Latz.

O’Hoppe’s bat has cooled after consecutive seasons of 20 and 19 home runs. He has four this season while batting only .209 with a .565 OPS. He will get some time to work on things at Triple A before the Rangers consider a promotion.

Their catching depth has been decimated by injuries to Danny Jansen and Kyle Higashioka, who shared time to start the season until Jansen hit the injured list in June. Higashioka landed on the IL last week. Both have elbow issues, and Jansen is considering surgery.

Elias Diaz and Austin Wynns are the Rangers’ current catchers. Wynns has struggled with the bat at other stops this season and hit his first homer of the season only Tuesday. Diaz started Wednesday night, two days after he was hit in the left hand by a pitch.

The Rangers will continue to scour the trade market leading up to the 5 p.m. Monday deadline. They could continue to add relief help and are also seeking a right-handed power hitter who can play the outfield.
