Quarterback Joe Milton is back on the Dallas Cowboys practice squad.

Not only does it subside the unnecessary drama and controversy surrounding the release of Milton on Sunday to make room running back Emari Demercado but it’s another huge win for the front office in how they shrewdly handled business this offseason.

The Cowboys made two huge business decisions this offseason and it has worked out perfectly for franchise in their focus on doing everything they can to win now.

They put the franchise tag on wide receiver George Pickens, while refusing to even negotiate a long-term extension, and they released Milton in favor of Sam Howell as the backup to starter Dak Prescott among other decisions in their win now mindet.

Rather than sulk or hold out, Pickens responded by being the best player in training camp. He is heading the season with a mindset of putting the league on notice with another big year and hopefully get paid next offseason as a free agent.

It was a gamble and risk by the Cowboys to handle Pickens this way, especially considering the drama of the Micah Parson contract impasse at training camp last season.

The Cowboys are being rewarded with a motivated Pickens who loves being in Dallas with close friend and fellow receiver CeeDee Lamb and Prescott, the pied piper of the organizaton.

The same can be said of the Milton situation.

A lot of handwringing emerged when Milton was cut because of his size, athleticism and arm strength. He made huge jump in development from last year to this year.

But the Cowboys brough in Howell for a reason and they trusted his consistency in being able to run the offense in a pinch if something happened to Prescott.

They still love Milton’s potential and didn’t want to lose him but it was a risk they were willing to take under the guise of putting together their best roster to win now, starting in the Sept. 13 season opener against the New York Giants.

The Cowboys’ mindset was justified when 31 other teams chose not to sign Milton to their roster after he was released.

He had offers to join the practice squads of other tems.

But Milton came back to the Cowboys to continue his development under Brian Schottenheimer.

It’s another win for Schottenheimer in the name of culture and brotherhood. The players like his environment.

The quarterback room is strong with Dak Prescott, Howell and Milton.

And front office won with another shrewd decision with the focus on winning now over development for the future.
