Can Dalvin Cook help the Dallas Cowboys struggling running game? It appears to be time to find out

Dalvin Cook had a smile on his face as I moved towards him in the Dallas Cowboys locker room.

It’s part of the little game that we have been playing the past few weeks as I’ve sought answers about his role in the Cowboys offense.

“I’m going to let them tell you but I think this is the week,” Cook said.

If so then it’s about time.

The Cowboys rank last in the NFL in rushing yards, yards per game and rushing touchdowns. Dallas is the only team without a run of 20 or more yards.

A lack of carries, lobsided scores and break downs on a young offensive line, featuring two rookie starters, are part of the blame.

But the Cowboys are at the point in the season where they must exhaust all options and that includes finally giving a former four time Pro Bowler languishing in your practice squad

It’s the reason you signed Cook before the start of season.

He is in shape. He has an understanding of the offense. He has been getting reps with the first team in practice.

It’s a move whose time has come.

Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy left the door open for Cook during his press conference on Friday.

“Dalvin is ready,” McCarthy said. “I like work he is putting in. He has crossed the threshold. I think he is position to (play).

Normally, Cook has waited to hear owner Jerry Jones on his Tuesday radio show to find out his playing status.

Jones had other issues to discuss this week.

Cooks’ smile in the locker room Thursday seemingly said it all.
