The Dallas Cowboys have brought in long-term NFL defensive coordinator Mike Pettine to be a senior assistant to oversee struggling rookie defensive coordinator Christian Parker.
And now Parker will watch games from farther away.
Owner Jerry Jones announced on his radio show on 105.3 The Fan that Parker will move from sidelines to the coaching booth to call defensive plays.
“You search for what we can do differently that would give us better results,” Jones said. “That’s the main emphasis that we would spend some, let’s say, specific attention to areas. We’re going to coach the defense from not on the field, but up above. Parker’s going up above.
“You should be looking for ways to adjust and make changes to improve. That’s the point of improving from the results we had the last few weeks.”
The Cowboys are leaving no stone unturned as Parker’s first five weeks as a defensive coordinator has been an abject failure in terms of results on the field.
“I’m obviously disappointed in our results so far,” Jones said.
The Cowboys (2-3) still have playoff hopes because of NFC East in down but they need to get better in hurry.
The Dallas defense is 31st in the NFL with 395.4 yards allowed per game and has allowed a league-worst 168.4 rushing yards per game heading into Sunday’s game against the Green Bay Packers.
The Cowboys are last in third down defense and opposing quarterback rating. They are 26th in scoring defense.
Jones said doesn’t believe Parker is overwhelmed. But he acknowledges he has had a lot on his plate as a first time coordinator in terms of roster, scheme and personnel changes.
“You put that all together and you’ve got some work to do to putting that all in place relative to the challenges you have when you really get into the ballgames,” Jones said.
