Dak Prescott has no regrets about dubbing the Dallas Cowboys offense GOTI for Greatest Offense There Is.
Certainly, there is the hate that comes with saying you are the best ever at something before it happens.
There is the potential of derisive ridicule if you don’t accomplish it.
And there is the inherent pressure of being true to your word and living to expectations.
Prescott initially made the proclamation behind closed doors.
But he boldly confirmed it training camp.
And while Cowboys season hasn’t started exactly as they hoped _ they are 2-2 headed into Thursday’s game against the 0-4 Tampa Bay Buccaneers _ Prescott is loudly and proudly doubling down on GOTI with his chest.
“We are what, 4 games in? I think we can get better,” Prescott said. “Am I complacent with what we’ve done? Abolutely not. Do I think what we’ve done, is it enough? Absolutely not.
“Do I still believe that that’s who we are, and that’s who we’re gonna be? Damn right.”
“After stubbing their toe early and then not getting many opportunities in a 28-20 season opening loss to the New York Giants, the Cowboys offense has opened things up over the last three games , a 37-20 victory over Washington Commanders, a 34-31 loss the the Baltimore Ravens and a 34-30 victory against Houston Texans.
The last two games have shown the highs and lows of the nickname and mantra.
The Cowboys offense failed to score a touchdown in their final drive against Ravens, settling for a field goal and a tie after getting a first and goal at the 2 only to lose on a game-winning kick as time expired. After the game, Prescott said the team didn’t live up to its nickname GOTI.
But last week against the Texans, Prescott and offense was ever bit of GOTI, scoring four second half touchdowns, including a game-winning 12-yard pass to Ceedee Lamb with 40 seconds left.
They were simply unstoppable and in a zone in the second half against a defense as talented as any in the league.
While the Cowboys are 11th in the NFL in yards at 347.5 per game, they are second in scoring at 30.5.
A deeper look into that reveals that the Cowboys have already been GOTI.
They are second in scoring despite have the fewest drives or opportunities than any team in the league.
That they averaging 3.39 points per drive is the real secret sauce, which ranks No. 1 in the NFL.
More on GOTI, they currently rank fifth in points per drive through four games since 2000. If they keep it up for the full season, it would be the best this century.
The scary part is the Cowboys are not yet hitting on all cylinders and have yet to put a full game together.
The encouraging part is there is still meat left on the bone.
Lamb leads the league in receiving yards and Prescott has been in a zone as passer.
No quarterback in the NFL is playing better right now.
But the Cowboys have played their first four games without all pro left guard Tyler Smith, who has been out recovering from thumb surgery
He is expected to be back on Thursday
And 2025 all pro receiver George Pickens has yet to get untracked.
Pickens has 28 catches for 225 yards and no touchdowns. Lamb 37 catches for 498 and four touchdowns,
When Prescott talked about the Cowboys being GOTI, he was anticipating dominating performances from Lamb and Pickens.
And they know and believe a Pickens breakout game is coming.
“It’s encouraging to your point. Yeah, knowing that those are good numbers, but they can find numbers for everything,” Prescott said. “I am not a guy that gets caught up in the numbers, and the stats, and the records, or any of that, because of, because of things like that, right? We’re four games in, and they’re already pulling out numbers of teams based on their whole season. Yeah, it’s encouraging, I guess, ’cause we’re not even where we want to be, and we haven’t put together all four quarters the way that we believe we can. Yeah, but like I said, I believe that’s who we are.”
From GOTI to better than GOTI is now on the table for the Cowboys.
The Cowboys know they have to be GOTI for the full season if they hope to realize their dreams of making the playoffs and reaching the Super Bowl for the first time since 1996.
As on the flip side of the offense is a defense that continues to rank among the worst in the NFL.
While the Cowboys’ OFFENSE has the highest percentage of drives ending in a score this season, the Cowboys’ DEFENSE has allowed the highest percentage of drives ending in a score this season.
They are dead last in yards per play allowed at 6.4. They are 30th in points allowed per drive. They are last in the NFL in opponents yards per drive. The defense is also last in opponents third down percentage.
But make no mistake about it, Prescott believes in GOTI.
And to hell with the naysayers or trolls
Prescott means what he says.
“I wouldn’t say if I wouldn’t believe it,” Prescott said.” I can pretty firmly say you won’t catch me saying I regret anything.”
