FRISCO — Dallas Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs has made a career — and a lot of money — on taking things away. He’s built a reputation on being one of the best ballhawks in the NFL.
On Wednesday, instead of taking away something, he gave a gift. A fitting one, too.
After Sunday’s loss to San Francisco, Diggs emerged from the locker room in his full game uniform and phone in hand. Reporters on scene hadn’t been let into the locker room yet for postgame interviews, but Diggs wanted to talk to speak with one reporter specifically. Diggs confronted WFAA-TV’s Mike Leslie about a tweet Leslie had during the game.
Diggs questioned why that was Leslie’s takeaway from the play, adding that Leslie didn’t know football like him and that Leslie should stay in his lane.
Leslie asked Diggs if he wanted to talk more about it. Diggs responded by saying they could talk about “deez nuts.”
“I think that’s clearly an example of frustration,” Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy said on Monday. “But I think we have to be better in those moments. I always talk about staying on a high road, that’s part of our responsibility in this business. But I’m not ignorant or naive to the fact that this generation, that’s part of the world they live in, the social media world. you have to manage that. That’s part of being a professional athlete and that’s part of representing this organization properly.”
Diggs didn’t practice on Wednesday as he recovers from a sore calf, but he did meet with reporters to talk about Sunday’s confrontation. He also talked about much more.
Diggs, admittedly shy in nature, was very candid. He answered multiple different questions: about his tackling ability and why he’s “no Kam Chancellor,” about the team’s lack of takeaways, and, of course, about the interaction with Leslie.
“I shouldn’t have reacted the way I reacted,” Diggs said. “I apologize for that. Most of it caught me at the right time.”
Diggs later was asked about keeping composure during a frustrating, 3-4 season.
“I definitely care,” he said. “I definitely want to win. I definitely have a lot of emotions that I don’t show. So, I let that moment get the best of me. Like I said, you got to keep the main thing, the main thing. At the end of the day we lost, we all got to play better. We all got to find a way to win.”
Leslie tweeted that he also apologized to Diggs about his perspective on the play. He said that he “misread” what Diggs was doing.
Leslie also had the chance to ask Diggs about the play itself.
“I just felt like we was playing football,: Diggs said. “From my point of view, I didn’t think I did anything wrong, but everyone has their own opinion.
“I felt like I was the last line of defense. My main was up the field and I was behind the safeties at the time so like yeah I was the last line of defense and I felt like I prevented him from scoring. I took the highest angle. Yeah. I didn’t think that my effort was a problem.”
Once the final question happened, Diggs surprised everyone by saying he had something for Leslie. He pulled out two cans of nuts. He let Leslie choose between banana flavored and ranch flavored. Leslie took the latter.
The cherry on top of the gesture was the brand: Dee’s Nuts.
Let it be known: Diggs may be known as a ballhawk, but also someone with a sense of humor, too.
