The Dallas Cowboys are expected to add former Pro Bowl running back Dalvin Cook to the practice squad, multiple sources told DLLS.
Cook visited the Cowboys earlier this week and worked out.
The practice squad will be official after the claiming period is complete at 12 p.m. EST.
The Cowboys finalized their initial 53-man roster on Tuesday. That left them with four members in their backfield: veteran Ezekiel Elliott, Rico Dowdle, fullback Hunter Luepke and second-year running back Deuce Vaughn.
Cook will likely join that group at least multiple times this season. The NFL allows teams to promote practice squad members three times during the season before they would have to either add that practice squad member to the active roster, or release them.
Cook, 29, has had a very successful career. The former second round pick averaged over four yards per carry each of his first six seasons in the NFL — all of which were with the Minnesota Vikings. He made the Pro Bowl four times in Minnesota, finishing his Vikings career with 5,993 rushing yards and 47 touchdowns.
Cook spent last season with the Baltimore Ravens and the New York Jets. He ran for 214 yards last season and averaged 3.2 yards per carry.
Cook told NFL Network that he feels better, and subsequently healthier, than he has in years.
The Cowboys are willing to at least see if that’s the case.
