Dallas Cowboys CB Trevon Diggs will be active against Atlanta

ATLANTA — The Atlanta Falcons have one of the best aerial attacks in the NFL. The Dallas Cowboys could use all they can to defend it.

The good news: that includes two-time Pro Bowl corner Trevon Diggs.

Diggs will be active despite not practicing this week due to an injured calf. Diggs was officially listed as questionable heading into Sunday’s game against the Falcons.

Diggs’ injury grew more concerning as the week went on. Originally, it didn’t seem like much of a big deal.

“I feel good,” Diggs said when he talked with reporters on Wednesday. “I had some tightness in my calf, a little sore coming out of the game. Probably one of the plays I got hit or something but it’s just really stiff. Just getting treatment and working through it.”

Diggs then missed a second-consecutive practice on Thursday, sparking questions to Cowboys owner Jerry Jones about Diggs’ status.

Jones told 105.3 The Fan on Friday that Diggs had a “tear” in his calf, though he did say that the injury wouldn’t necessarily rule him out for the Falcons game.

Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy told reporters on Friday that Diggs had a good workout with Britt Brown, the team’s director of rehabilitation. He even said it was better than expected.

Diggs walked into Mercedes-Bens Stadium on Sunday with a slight limp. He worked rehabilitation work with Brown prior to the game. After that went well, he started doing positional work with cornerbacks coach Al Harris, setting the stage for him to play.

The Cowboys were already thin at corner. Reigning All-Pro corner DaRon Bland was activated off injured reserve this week, but is still not ready to play. Bland had surgery to repair a stress fracture in his foot at the end of training camp. Amani Oruwariye (back) was added to injured reserve to make room for Bland.

The Cowboys also elevated Josh Butler from the practice squad, along with running back Dalvin Cook.

The Falcons use three wide-receiver sets more than any team in the NFL, according to Sumer Sports. They use that personnel roughly 90% of the time.

That means Dallas will need all the corner help they can get. Having Diggs on the field is a big boost toward those efforts.
