The Dallas Cowboys announced on Monday that defensive end Sam Williams is serving a three game suspension without pay due to a violation of the NFL’s personal conduct policy.
The suspension actually began prior to the San Francisco 49ers game on Sunday.
Williams is out for the season due to a torn ACL he suffered in training camp prior to this season.
The suspension was handed down by the league office after an investigation into a 2023 Williams arrest.
Williams was pulled over after Frisco Police allegedly clocked him driving 71 miles per hour in a 45 mile per hour zone. After being pulled over, Williams was taken into custody by police on charges of having a controlled substance and unlawful carrying of a weapon, according to a police report obtained by WFAA-TV. Williams was also charged with reckless driving.
Williams may be out for the season, but the punishment does suspend him from being paid for three weeks. Players on injured reserve are still compensated.
The Cowboys had big hopes for Williams heading into this season. The former second round pick out of Ole Miss had shown promise in his first two seasons, totaling 8.5 sacks and finishing fifth in the AP Defensive Rookie of the Year voting. The Cowboys were looking toward him to fill the holes left by the losses of Dorance Armstrong and Dante Fowler Jr.
Williams suffered a torn ACL during a special teams drill on July 28.
Williams will return from his suspension after the Philadelphia Eagles game in Week 10.
