Klay Thompson

Klay Thompson had started every game for the Dallas Mavericks this season but had yet to play more than 23 minutes.

The four-time NBA champion has endured one of the roughest starts of his career, posting a team-worst minus-74 plus-minus and shooting a career-low 26.2% from 3-point range.

So, head coach Jason Kidd made a change — benching Thompson in favor of D’Angelo Russell.

But, even with a lineup the Mavericks fell to the New Orleans Pelicans 101-99 on Wednesday at the American Airlines Center.

Thompson responded with one of his best performances of the season off the bench, finishing with 11 points and four rebounds on 4-of-9 shooting. He made a 3-pointer, hit a contested midrange jumper, and assisted on a Brandon Williams 3-pointer during his first three minutes on the floor.

Russell, meanwhile, struggled to find rhythm. He shot 3-of-10 from the field and recorded only three assists. Entering the game, the Mavericks had a 113.1 offensive rating when Russell was on the floor compared to 96.8 when he’s off, but Dallas’ offense sputtered against New Orleans.

Dallas will have a chance to return to its original starting lineup Friday against the Memphis Grizzlies.
