For much of the night, the Dallas Mavericks looked like they were one run away from breaking through. But every time the shots seemed ready to fall, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the Thunder had an answer.
Oklahoma City pulled away late behind the reigning MVP, beating Dallas 101-94 at American Airlines Center on Monday night. The loss dropped the Mavericks to 1-3, while the Thunder improved to 4-0 to open the season.
Dallas trailed only 48-42 at halftime, staying within reach despite a cold shooting stretch that defined the night. The Mavericks shot just 33.3% from the field, 26.3% from 3-point range and 58.3% from the free-throw line, numbers that made it difficult to sustain momentum, at halftime.
Gilgeous-Alexander, who had just eight points and no free-throw attempts in the first half, found his rhythm after the break. His contested 3-pointer over Max Christie midway through the third quarter was the turning point, part of his 14-point performance.
For Dallas, rookie forward Cooper Flagg had one of his roughest outings since turning pro. He finished 1-of-9 from the field with two points, two rebounds and no assists, struggling to find his usual impact on both ends.
Anthony Davis continued his strong start to the season with 26 points and 11 rebounds, anchoring the Mavericks defensively and keeping them in the game until late. But without consistent scoring from the perimeter, Dallas couldn’t overcome the Thunder’s balance and pace.
But, a late push captained by Davis with help from Christie and PJ Washington almost brought the Mavericks back. Nevertheless the Mavericks comeback attempt was too late.
