Jerry Jones not interested in tanking, not giving up on Mike McCarthy or Dallas Cowboys season

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, the self-proclaimed best general manager in the NFL, is not on team tank.

Not only does he want Cowboys to win as many as many games as they can, he has not given up on the 2024 season and a miraculous playoff run.

That’s what Sundays 34-26 victory against the Washington Commanders has wrought to the chagrin of many Cowboys fans that had starting putting their hopes in a top pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.

A five-game losing streak is over and the Cowboys are now looking at going on a possible run themselves with four upcoming games against teams with losing records, starting Thursday against the New York Giants (2-9).

“We want to really take advantage of an uptick here and put some wins together,” Jones said on is radio show on 105.3 The Fan. “This thing isn’t over.”

Never mind that the 4-7 Cowboys are still closer to a top 10 draft than a playoff that possibly end just like the last three 12-5  seasons with an earlier playoff exit, which is the reason coach Mike McCarthy entered the season on the hot seat in the last year of his contract.

Jones says winning is always better than losing and the draft will take care of itself.

He is aligned with edge rusher Micah Parsons: tanking is not on their agenda.

“I’m not done yet. I don’t plan on tanking,” Parsons said after the game on Sunday. “If the higher-ups are looking for a draft pick, I hope that’s ruined, because we got a lot of football left to play. As long as I’m a part of this team, we’re always going to fight.”

Jones wholeheartedly agreed.

“Just absolutely love it. And Michael gets criticized for some of the things that he says, but the way that was articulated is strong and it was just a succinct statement and it sits the way that it is,” Jones said. “We need to be winning or trying to win, obviously ever down. Now for those that don’t understand thinking, it means that you get higher, that you or the lower your record is, the higher that you get to draft. That has not come across anybody’s mind in this organization. It’s critical to us to get out here and compete. Those guys will be there for us, the ones we want when we get there in the draft.”

And if the Cowboys continue to win, it may pave the way for a McCarthy return in 2025. He is in the final year of his contract and was charged with not only getting to playoffs but going to the NFL title game or the Super Bowl to earn an extension.

Jones said nothing has been decided and there is a lot of football left to play.

“Well, I don’t think that’s crazy at all. That’s not crazy,” Jones said of McCarthy possibly coming back in 2025. “Mike McCarthy is an outstanding coach. This is a Super Bowl winning coach and Mike McCarthy has been there and done that. He’s got great ideas. So bottom line is that in no place in my body language or anything else have you seen indications about what we’re going to be doing relative to this staff at the end of this year. And we shouldn’t. We got a lot of football left.”
