The Dallas Cowboys will place quarterback Dak Prescott on injured reserve, sidelining him at least four weeks with the hamstring injury he suffered in Sunday’s 27-21 loss to the Atlanta Falcons.
The Cowboys expected Prescott would miss multiple weeks after a magnetic resonance imaging exam revealed the injury was more significant than originally thought. Prescott sought a second opinion to be sure.
Owner Jerry Jones made the decision official Tuesday morning on his radio show on the team’s flagship station, saying Prescott will be out an extended period of time.
Prescott acknowledged to All City DLLS he thought the injury was something he “could play through.”
“Shit sucks,” Prescott said. “I’m going to try to play as soon as I can.”
The Cowboys (3-5), who are riding a three-game losing streak, will turn to backup Cooper Rush in Prescott’s absence, starting Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles (6-2).
Rush has a 5-1 record in place of Prescott in his career.
Jones expressed confidence in Rush’s ability to lead the team. But he said the team could also use third string quarterback Trey Lance in certain situations.
