SAN ANTONIO — The Mavericks trailed by as many as 19 points and entered the fourth quarter down double digits against the Spurs. But with 24 seconds remaining, Dallas had possession and a chance to take the lead.
As the clock ticked down, Mavericks guard Walter Clayton Jr. dribbled from side to side until Kyrie Irving took the ball from the two-way player.
Irving tried to drive past Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox but was stonewalled. He turned for a fadeaway jumper, but the shot hit the backboard as the clock expired before the Mavericks could attempt another shot.
Dallas lost 112-111 to San Antonio at the Frost Bank Center on Wednesday night.
“Just wanted to give him a double gap,” Mavericks coach Dusty May said. “We had Fox on him, and wanted to get a drive (to the) middle and Coop cutting from the corner. Just felt like we had an advantage in space and probably attacked a little bit too late.”
