LAS VEGAS — The Mavericks’ third summer league game started off with some bad news: No. 9 pick Morez Johnson Jr. (calf soreness) and Ryan Nembhard (illness) were out.
Without Johnson, the Mavericks lacked an anchor big to help contain Memphis Grizzlies first-round pick Cameron Boozer. The 18-year-old had 23 points, six rebounds and four assists in Memphis’ win against the Bulls last week.
But while Boozer finished with 21 points, eight rebounds and five assists against the Mavericks, Dallas implemented a strategy to help negate his impact.
Vsevolod Ishchenko (Seva), the Mavericks’ second-round pick, started the game guarding the 250-pound behemoth. While Boozer had more than enough strength to move Seva deep into the paint, Mavericks summer league coach Joe Boylan’s help-and-recover scheme proved effective.
