A relay from Brandon Nimmo to Nicky Lopez to Elias Diaz in the ninth inning kept the Texas Rangers in the lead, though they had to hold their breath in a 2-1 victory over the Orioles.
ARLINGTON — Tinker to Evers to Chance is the most storied defensive trio in baseball history, though their claim to fame was turning double plays more than 100 years ago. Nimmo to Lopez to Diaz had a nice ring to it, too, Friday night for the Texas Rangers.
That trio — right fielder Brandon Nimmo, second baseman Nicky Lopez and catcher Elias Diaz — teamed for a crucial and successful relay in the ninth inning to help preserve a 2-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles.
The out call stood after a lengthy replay challenge, and even Diaz had questions afterward about whether he had applied the tag in time to get the speedy Leody Taveras. Diaz also had no answer for this: How the hell did he hang onto the ball?
