Left-hander Jacob Latz went to spring training to compete for a job in the Texas Rangers’ starting rotation. After the first month of the season, he’s serving as the Rangers’ closer.
The Texas Rangers have the best bullpen ERA in the American League and second-best in the majors, despite not having a traditional closer. It’s been a closer-by-committee plan so far, but the Rangers might have stumbled upon a pitcher who settles into the role. It’s Jacob Latz, who recorded the final six outs Wednesday in a 3-0 victory over the Yankees. Latz was competing to be in the starting rotation in spring training, but has arguably been the Rangers’ best reliever this season. A few other good things happened Wednesday as the Rangers snapped a three-game losing streak, but there is one issue still hanging over the team and change could be coming.
