The Texas Rangers avoided a second sweep this season to the Mariners in an unusual way … by hitting. The Rangers scored six times in the third inning en route to an 8-1 victory in which Josh Smith collected a career-high four hits. Jacob deGrom wasn’t at his best, but he held the potent Seattle lineup to only one run in five innings. Corey Seager had the breakthrough hit, a two-run single in the third, and the line kept moving from there. Manager Bruce Bochy called this a critical game. The Rangers didn’t want to be swept again by a division foe, and they wanted some momentum to take with them on the road.
