The Texas Rangers were an out away from avoiding a sweep at Tampa Bay, and left-hander Robert Garcia induced a groundball that should have ended the game. Alas, first baseman Josh Smith wandered too far off the bag trying to get a ball easily fielded by Marcus Semien, and Garcia didn’t make it to cover first. Two runs scored on the play to cap a three-run rally by the Rays and a 4-3 walk-off win. The Rangers’ defense lapsed in all three losses at Steinbrenner Field. Semien connected for two home runs Thursday, and Jake Burger hit another. Jack Leiter was effective for five innings, and the bullpen did its job through the eighth inning. Trouble hit, and the Rangers might be in trouble.
