A baseball offseason is filled with deadlines, and another arrived Tuesday with the deadline to set the reserve roster. What’s the reserve roster? It’s the 40-man roster, and all teams had decisions to make about which prospects to protect from the Rule 5 draft by adding them. The Rule 5 draft is held each winter meetings and is for players who have been in the farm system four (older than 18 when signed) or five (18 or younger when signed) years without reaching the majors. The Rangers have several candidates but are likely to protect only three. Right-hander David Davalillo is a lock, and first baseman Abi Ortiz has a very good chance. Leandro Lopez, another right-hander, is also a good candidate. The Rangers also have to consider 2021 third-rounder Cameron Cauley, an infielder from Southeast Texas.
