The Texas Rangers have their manager in Skip Schumaker, and he wants to build a winning culture. But he needs the players’ buy-in. How does he accomplish that? He can start taking small steps with one-on-one conversations in-person or on the phone in the offseason, but a lot of the trust-building will come in spring training. The players will trust in him because he’s not far removed from playing the game, but they also will need to see what he’s preaching put in action and actually work. He needs a coaching staff he trusts to carry out his mission, and he could use some veterans stepping forward to help lead the charge in the clubhouse. Hitting philosophy might be the toughest sell.
